TechTasters: 2010 Broadband Event Series. Washington, DC – October 14, 2009
Sojournals, the Washington, DC metropolitan area premier online social network is preparing for the TechTasters 2010 event series. The events will incorporate micro blogging (more specifically Twitter), life streaming, and crowd sourcing. Sojournals President and Howard Alum Kelli Anderson created these workshops and events as a way to introduce social media, crowd-sourcing, and other broadband related networking methods to Washington’s community of tech savvy professionals, educators, and artists. Anderson describes these individuals as TechTasters. These events will take place in a variety of WiFi capable venues TBA. Anderson says each workshop will feature a mix of video demos, hands on how-to’s, guest speakers, and of most important micro blogging. More information about the events will be announced as details are finalized.

Widget Laboratory has given Network Creators on the popular Do-It-Your-Self social network builder Ning a way to migrate their members to Ning competitor SocialGo. SocialGo recently hired Widget Laboratory to provide their popular modular applications on their social community platform which were once available to Ning Network Creators. In Widget Laboratory’s most recent newsletter they state their reason for creating N*ngToGo. “We have developed a free and simple series of tools that will let you automatically migrate your membership to SocialGO and create a “merger” between your old Ning site and your new SocialGO premium site. This means that you can eliminate the cost of paying premium membership fees to Ning, while obtaining MORE power and control over your Social Network for the same cost per month or less.” This is as a result of Ning’s recent decision to remove the FTP and WebDav access, the closing of their Open API and Rest. Then their was the last straw, Ning created the “Ning.com” central site where all site members, from every Ning created site would now be connected. This made it much easier to loose members to other networks with similar interests. SoJo Labs plans to test this feature with it’s own Ning network http://sojournalists.ning.com/. I saw Phonevite in today’s Mashable e-newsletter and tired it out immediately. So far setup has taken a little longer than I would like, there is no data portability to import your contacts from email. you can only upload a .csv file. Phonevite allows you to send voice messages via your phone or the web to be sent to email, phones, twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and can even be embedded on web pages. While messages do post to the a fore mentioned social networks, it does not play on the sites, but redirects you to the Phonevite.com profile users profile to listen to the recording. I found this to be another disappointment. On the Phonevite website they list many ways that this app could be used including:

• Send Absence notifications
• Remind colleagues of Conference Call or Sales Meeting
• Announce Company News
• Broadcast Emergency Alerts
• Provide Appointment Reminders
• Confirm Orders and Product Delivery Status
• Recruit Volunteers / Substitutes
The embeddable widget makes for convenient messaging from any website or blog. However there is no support for embedding on non-hosted Wordpress pages at this time. Premium services include Email Voice Messages, unlimited broadcasts, but calls have a maxium length of 2 minutes. Similar services like Utterli, and Vlingo do a better job of sharing voice data with less steps, more crossposting, and and ease of importing contacts.
